Have a business in Lake Macquarie? Then make sure you enter the Lake Mac Business Excellence Awards! They close on 18 May 2018 so there is just enough time to put together some great submissions.
MY TOP TIPS
(I won 5 of them in 2016 & 2017 so hopefully I picked up a trick or two! But don’t worry – I was asked to be an Awards Ambassador this year, so won’t be entering in 2018)
1 – EVIDENCE: Make your responses key data and evidence rich. That is, you can’t just say, “we are great at service” – more like, “our customers tell us they love our service by rating us 4.9 out of 5 across the last year’s worth of monthly surveys sent to all customers”). Remember it still needs to be punchy so use dot points to avoid the judged dying of data boredom!
2 – PHOTOS IN THE ATTACHMENTS: Photos and images are great evidence of your methods, culture and results. I used a brochure template on affordable online DIY design service Canva to make beautiful PDFs to attach to the text component of the submissions. I included everything from photos of our admin manual (to show it really exists) to team training events and examples of our patient education materials.
3 – CUSTOMER STORIES: I included a numbers of publicly verifiable testimonials, both in the text submission but also screen shots (like of our Google review page) in the PDF for evidence.
Every business needs to stand out. Being able to say we are multi-award winning gives us another way of doing that (it is actually one of the “stars” in our 5 star difference – our marketing tag line). Every business can use another feather in their cap in a crowded market.
It also raises your profile in the Lake Macquarie and broader Hunter region (especially if you are a finalist and/or winner) and provide an opportunity to meet some other like-minded business owners. We have personally employed a number of previous finalists from industries like IT, marketing and even landscaping.
TRIED BEFORE AND DIDN’T WIN – SHOULD YOU TRY AGAIN?
Yes! We don’t win every award we enter. In fact, we have missed out more than half the time. Since we started entering various awards in 2014, we have been finalists 18 times but only taken away 7 awards. Still a great result, but each time I write a submission I get better and our business is better too.
So keep thinking about how to make your business and submissions better and hopefully a win isn’t too far away. I still believe there is value in being a finalist, especially in awards like the Lake Mac Awards which are independently judged and not run for profit.
See the website for more information and hopefully, I’ll see you on the Awards Night in July!
